Giving Back This Season: BugHut’s 12 Days of Giving

This time of year, our plants are in a season of rest, our gardens are dormant, and we’re slowing down to practice gratitude and dedicate time to giving back. As a way to connect with causes we care about and share our favorite ways of giving back to the community, we’ve filled our December calendar with 12 Days of Giving. Each of the 12 days is dedicated to its own cause, and they all involve their own unique approach to giving back.

We hope you’ll join us in giving back this season! Here are a few causes we’ll be contributing to during our 12 Days of Giving.

Operation Christmas Child

For our first day of giving, we donated 20% of our December 3rd sales to Operation Christmas Child, an organization sending gift boxes to children worldwide. Gift boxes contain essential items like school supplies, toys like stuffed animals and harmonicas, and accessories including calculators and clothing items. We’re proud to make the holiday season special for children across the globe!

Feeding America

As mindful gardeners, we’re acutely aware of the role that food quality and food accessibility play in every individual’s life. With 47 million people in America experiencing food insecurity, access to fresh garden vegetables is a true privilege.

That’s why we felt called to give back to Feeding America, an organization making healthy meals available through food banks and pantries while reducing food waste through food rescue programs. We donated 20% of our December 10th sales to Feeding America, resulting in 1,000 meals provided.

Angel Tree

Every child deserves to open an exciting gift on Christmas morning! We loved shopping for our town’s Angel Tree to make Christmas special for a local child.

Here’s how Angel Tree works: We chose an ornament from a tree at our local Walmart. The ornament described a gift on an anonymous local child’s wishlist. We shopped to find the perfect gift and dropped it off at the local Salvation Army, and it will be given to the child to open by Christmas! This is one of our favorite paths to giving back each year.

Cards for Soldiers

Giving back comes in a variety of forms, and often the best way to give back is through our time and care rather than material items. Every year, we take time to acknowledge the fact that not everyone gets to spend the holidays with their loved ones. To spread the season’s joy to those serving our country, we write holiday cards for soldiers and veterans.

Water for Good

Lack of access to clean water impacts every aspect of life for 703 million people worldwide. Water for Good works to reduce that number by drilling and maintaining wells in areas with low water access. Keeping sustainability at the forefront, this organization collaborates with local leaders to ensure long-term improvements to water access. We’re looking forward to a House Plus Plant collaboration aimed at giving back to Water for Good later in December.

It doesn’t end there! We’ll also be hosting giveaways, spreading kindness on social media, promoting community programs, and more.

Our 12 Days of Giving practice gives us a chance to appreciate what we have while giving back to the community and connecting with others. We love that giving can come in so many forms, from donating a portion of a day’s sales to spending time in our local nursing homes. There are so many beautiful ways to give back and countless worthy causes to get involved with!
